Healthy Eating
Making the nutritious choice, the easy choice
Access to healthy, affordable foods is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. However, adequate nutrition is out of reach for far too many Yellowstone County residents. Unhealthy diet is associated with increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers. A well balanced diet can prevent and help manage these chronic conditions. Healthy By Design’s very first efforts to improve nutrition began with the creation of the Gardeners’ Market and Event Recognition initiatives.
The Gardeners’ Market, which started with vendors selling produce out of truck beds in the RiverStone Health parking lot in 2011, is now a signature summer event at beautiful South Park in the heart of the South Side neighborhood.
Since the initial market in 2011:
- The market has grown from an average of 4 to 11 vendors each week and from just $4,000 in annual sales in 2012 to $24,000 in 2020.
- Payment options have expanded to include cash, debit/credit, SNAP, WIC farm direct vouchers, and senior farmers’ market nutrition program coupons.
- Our Coalition has successfully received three Farmers Market Promotion Program grants from the USDA.
Supporting healthier local events
Event Recognition began in 2011 by providing local event organizers with expert advice on creating healthier events through menu choices and portion control. Event planners also receive recommendations to promote physical activity, environmental stewardship, and safety. Recognition opportunities have expanded to include recognition of worksites, school wellness champions, and food trucks.
Vision for year-round access to a South Side grocer
There is also strong evidence that strategies to improve healthy food options in food retailers such as grocery stores, corner markets and stores, workplaces, schools, and coffee shops can play a significant role in healthier eating behaviors. This is especially true for residents of neighborhoods that lack access to full service grocery stores, who otherwise may find it easier to find junk food than fruits and vegetables. From providing nutritious options to product placement and marketing, food retailers can make a positive impact on health. Recently, our Coalition completed a feasibility study for a South Side Grocery Market while also developing a resource network of healthy food truck vendors across Yellowstone County.
